Take a good look at EE at UB
We perform the state-of-art research
From nanoelectronics to a silicon chip that imitates the retina in an octopus eye, from radar imaging to multimedia video compression, our faculty is actively pursuing a wide range of interesting research.
- During the most recent academic year, our department research expenditure was $3.1 million. We have 26 new grants totaling $4.45 million.
- This year our faculty published 45 journal papers. We made 75 conference presentations, 19 are invited.
- Our faculty members participate in interdisciplinary research centers such as the university’s Institute of Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics. Our faculty operates the NSF Integrated Graduate Education Research Traineeship in biophotonics.
We provide modern facilities and a very friendly learning environment
- We have world-class supercomputer facilities and UB is a member of Internet2.
- We have a commercial software design suite and educational software such as Java applets and photonics CAD tools.
Our semiconductor fabrication facilities include thin film deposition, e-beam lithography, X-ray diffractometers, and AFM. - We have high frequency network analyzers and femtosecond lasers.
- We’re adding new facilities for the fabrication and characterization of nanostructures to study electronic transport and single electron detectors for photon counting and quantum cryptography.
Our graduates develop successful careers
No matter whether you are interested in academia or industry, you can find successful role models among our alumni.
- In recent years, our alumni have joined the faculties at universities such as UC San Francisco and the University of Maryland.
- Our alumni are leaders in major corporations such as Cisco Systems, IBM, and Nortel.
- One of our alumni is the president of an international university in Asia.
- Another alumnus is the director of a research laboratory at the NSA.
- We also graduate entrepreneurs. They have founded companies in fields ranging from satellite link, to blue LED and laser, to untrasound finger printing.
We build good memories
In addition to their studies, our students find the life around Buffalo very enjoyable. Many of our students and their families take advantages of the comfortable weather from spring to fall for outdoor activities. They take visitors to see nearby Niagara Falls or to visit Toronto, just a two hour drive away. Some of our students enjoy the winter skiing season.
All our graduates treasure their experiences at UB EE. Many of them come back and pay visits years after graduation with their children. They maintain close contacts with their fellow Buffalonians!
