Course Description:
This course will study the fundamentals of optical device operation: propagation of coherent light in crystals, nonlinear optics, harmonic generation and parametric oscillation, electro-optics and optical detection. We will emphasize the use of short laser pulses (femtosecond) in these devices. Moreover, it will be an overview of these processes and will show how these processes are used in ascertaining semiconductor optical properties that are essential for the optimization of photonic devices (e.g. lasers, modulators, optical switches) based on semiconductors.
