About Undergraduate Graduate Admission Research People |
Students who Begin at UB in the Freshman Year All engineering departments at UB are part of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). All Freshman programs in SEAS are identical. Students admitted into Engineering are designated as EAS (Engineering and Applied Science) majors. Admission into EAS is handled by the University Admissions, 17 Capen, 645-6648. Three full-time advisors in Engineering Student Services advise students in their first two years. Students from secondary schools (high schools) must have completed mathematics through trigonometry, and should have completed high school chemistry and physics. A fourth year of high school mathematics (such as calculus or pre-calculus) is very useful. An acquaintance with computers from high school computer science courses is also useful. However, if a student must choose between a fourth year of high school mathematics and a high school computer science course, the mathematics course is the better choice. High school grades, class standing, and either Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Testing (ACT) are considered in the admission process. Although the minimums for acceptance are lower, the experience of the EE Department is that an SAT Mathematics Score of 640 or better indicates the degree of high school mathematics aptitude needed for success in the EE undergraduate program. The College Board Achievement Test (CBAT) is not currently required for admission to UB. Experience of the department indicates, however that a score of 600 or above in the CBAT Level I Mathematics test is an indicator of a sufficient level of preparation in high school mathematics. During Freshman Orientation, students take a Mathematics Skills Test, roughly equivalent in content to CBAT Mathematics, Level 1. If this test indicates sufficient high school preparation for Calculus I, the student may begin the Freshman year program, in the undergraduate manual. Otherwise, the student will be advised to begin with MTH 115, College Algebra and Trigonometry and to follow a 5-year program, see Appendix A in Undergraduate Manual. Registration for the First Year, Fall Semester takes place during Freshman Orientation. Engineering Students Who Transfer to UB Students transfer to the department from the following types of programs:
There is no provision for transfer from Engineering Technology programs. Students who attempt transfer from Engineering Technology programs will find that few or none of their technical courses transfer. They should plan on completing all courses listed in Undergraduate Manual to meet the BSEE degree requirements. No transfer credit is given for courses taken at proprietary or correspondence schools. Engineering Students who Transfer into the Junior Year of the BSEE Program These transfers are usually from an Engineering Science Program at a community college or are part of a 3/2 program. The normal time to transfer is the beginning of UB's Fall Semester, Junior Year. Normally, students who transfer have completed:
The first course in Circuit Analysis (EE 202 or equivalent) is prerequisite to all Junior year courses. The second course in Circuit Analysis (EE 203 or equivalent) is prerequisite to EE 351-353. Students who transfer with just one course in Circuit Analysis will take EE 203 during the Fall semester, Junior year. During the Fall semester of the year prior to transfer obtain the "State of New York, Application Guidebook and Application" from your college's guidance office or directly from:
